Plaits

Despite people finding plaits and braiding really frustrating, I find braiding really therapeutic. I look at plaiting as 'scaffolding' for hair up designs. I feel as though plaits are really understated in their usefulness. Plaits can be used to anchor in hair up designs and they are really easy to do. (Well, I think so anyway)

Basic Plait (3 strands)

1. Brush all of the hair, you can't plait knotty hair.

2. Secure the hair any way you wish. (You can do this plait from free flowing hair or you can band off the hair you wish to braid. You can section the hair into a ponytail or bunches. It doesn't matter.
3. Split the hair into 3 even sections. Separate these pieces away from each other.
4. To explain the technique I'm going to name the strands : A, B and C.
5. Take Strand A and cross it over B and place it next to C
6. Take Strand C and cross this over B and place it where A was. By doing this B will have moved across and become the new Strand C.
7. Just repeat these steps all the way down the hair and secure with a band or pin when you reach the bottom.

I found this link really helpful in explaining the technique. It sounds so complicated when you have to try and explain the technique. I'm actually dreading the rest of the most complicated plaits up!

French Plait:

Tools:

Hairbrush
Comb
Hair tie

  1. Brush all of the hair thoroughly
  2. Using the pin tail comb section the hair as required.
  3. Starting at the top of the section, start off with a basic plait
  4. When you bring a section over you need to pick up a section of the hair and cross it over with the rest of the plait.
  5. Continue this down the hair and make sure that it's tight enough. It's important to make sure that the sections are all the same size or the plait will look wrong.
  6. When you run out of sections to add in, just finish the off the remaining hair with a 3 strand plait.
  7. Secure the end with a hair tie
  8. Finish with hair spray

Fishtail Plait.

Tools:

Hair ties (if required)
Brush
Clear elastics
Method:

To explain this method, I've explained it as if the hair was in a ponytail.

Brush the hair thoroughly. Put into a pony/bunch.
  1. Take the ponytail and split it into even two sections
  2. Starting with the left side, take a really small section and cross it over to the right section.
  3. Merge it with the right section.
  4. Take a small section from the right side and cross it over to the left section/
  5. Merge it with the left section.
  6. Work your way through the section repeating the above method
  7. The further you go down the ponytail it should thin itself out.
  8. The key is to not pull the strands too tightly because it will restrict what you can do with the finished plait.
  9. Secure the end with an elastic
  10. You can gently pull the sides of it to 'puff' out the plait.
  11. Use hairspray if needed.
