Various Methods of Curling

Tools:

-         - Kirby Grips
-         -Fine Pins
-         -Curling Tongs
-         -Paddle Brush
-         -Pin Comb

Method One: Spiral Curls

  1. Brush the hair through and make sure it’s knot free.
  2.  Section off the hair. It’s better to start at the bottom and work upwards at is you can see the direction of the curls. It also means you don’t ruin the curls you’ve already done.
  3.  Making sure the curling tongs are heated up the suitable temperature (subject to hair type) open up the curling tongs and place the hair in. Holding the tongs at a slight off vertical position, close the tongs on the hair and roll up towards the scalp. Making sure you don’t roll it back over itself, otherwise you’ll get a kink.
  4.   If you need to, place a pin comb at the root of the hair to prevent burning the client. Hold the hair in the tong for 10-12 seconds.
  5. If you are setting the curls hold it as it comes out of the tongs and gently pin it to the scalp into place using Kirby grips. Cooling down is really important as this is what sets the new hair structure
  6. Work your way through the hair, making sure you alternative with the direction of the curls.  When you reach the top of the head it’s important to think about how you want the hair to fall around the face. You might want curls that go away from the face, or curls that fall into the face. Consult with your brief or hair design to see what the required effect is
  7.  When you have finished all of the hair, make sure all of the hair is cool and set. Take out the Kirby grips and brush/style as required
  8. Spray with hair spray if needed

Method Two: Lift Curls

-         - Kirby Grips
-         -Fine Pins
-         -Curling Tongs
-         -Paddle Brush
-         -Pin Comb

Lift curls are used by curling tongs for a more periodic look. They create volume. They can be left and pinned in place or brushed through for a voluminous look.

  1. Brush the hair through and make sure it’s knot free.
  2.  Refer to haircharts/tearsheets/images for your required look. Then section the hair off as required. You might need lift curls down the side of the hair, or at the nape of the neck.
  3. Holding the curling tongs horizontally, take a piece of hair the same width as the length of the curling tongs.  Put the hair in and roll up to the scalp.
  4.   If you need to, place a pin comb at the root of the hair to prevent burning the client. Hold the hair in the tong for 10-12 seconds.
  5. Gently take the hair out of the tongs and using your fingers to keep the shape and roll it back the shape you created with the tongs and then pin in place with a kirby grip. This allows the hair to set during the cool down process.
  6. When you've completed the whole head or the required parts, leave time for it to cool down and then set with a hair spray if necessary and take the pins out
  7. Style as desired.

This is a combination of spiral curls and lift curls that I have done together. I really like the outcome. photo 12079698_10153240258906313_7132269080009265990_n_zpsfzug2lnh.jpg
